Elderberries (Sambucus nigra) are small, dark purple berries traditionally harvested in late summer. Once dried, they become a versatile ingredient for the homestead kitchen and apothecary.

These tart, richly flavored berries are perfect for making jams, jellies, pies, syrups, cordials, and wines. They are also commonly brewed into teas or tincture bases and pair well with warming spices like cinnamon, ginger, and cloves. A true seasonal staple, dried elderberries have been cherished across Europe and North America for centuries in both food and craft traditions.

Ingredients: Organic Elderberries

Are all of your ingredients organic?

We love providing herbs that are fresh, pure, and of the highest quality. Whenever possible, we source from small family farms that grow with care for the land. Some of our partners are USDA-certified organic, while others practice organic methods but choose not to certify due to the cost.

Because our own facility is not USDA-certified, we don’t label our finished products as “organic.” Instead, you’ll see “organic” noted in the ingredient lists when that particular ingredient was grown on a certified organic farm. We want to stay transparent while still offering you the cleanest, most responsibly grown ingredients we can find.

We’re grateful to support local growers, and we believe that when ingredients are raised with integrity, you can taste and feel the difference in every cup.

Herbs are legally sold by the ounce but often we get asked how many cups are in a bag.

This herb has an approximate average of 5 cups per pound.

Berries / Fruit

Elderberries should always be cooked before use. Raw elderberries, leaves, and stems may contain naturally occurring compounds that can cause stomach upset. Consult a qualified healthcare provider before use if pregnant, nursing, or managing a medical condition.
