Citric Acid is a commonly found acid in many fruits and vegetables, especially citrus fruits such as lemons and limes. It is used as a flavoring agent and preservative in food and beverage items, and by chefs in various dishes. When mixed with sodium bicarbonate, Citric Acid creates a fizzy, effervescent reaction, which is why it is a primary ingredient in bath bombs. Additionally, Citric Acid can be used as a natural cleaner for hard water stains, kitchen messes, and to dissolve mineral buildup. It can also passivate stainless steel and copper stills and deodorize with a pleasant, citrusy smell.
Citric acid also acts as a preservative when making elderberry gummies as well as helping to coat the outside of homemade gummies to keep them from sticking.
