Star Anise (Illicium verum), also called Chinese Star Anise, is a striking, star-shaped spice native to Asia. Known for its warm, licorice-like flavor and sweet aroma, it has been used for centuries in both culinary and herbal traditions.

These dried pods are versatile — perfect for simmering into broths and teas, adding depth to baked goods, or blending into potpourri and craft projects. With their bold flavor and unique shape, star anise pods are as beautiful as they are useful in the homestead kitchen.

Ingredients: Organic Star Anise

Are all of your ingredients organic?

We love providing herbs that are fresh, pure, and of the highest quality. Whenever possible, we source from small family farms that grow with care for the land. Some of our partners are USDA-certified organic, while others practice organic methods but choose not to certify due to the cost.

Because our own facility is not USDA-certified, we don’t label our finished products as “organic.” Instead, you’ll see “organic” noted in the ingredient lists when that particular ingredient was grown on a certified organic farm. We want to stay transparent while still offering you the cleanest, most responsibly grown ingredients we can find.

We’re grateful to support local growers, and we believe that when ingredients are raised with integrity, you can taste and feel the difference in every cup.

Herbs are legally sold by the ounce but often we get asked how many cups are in a bag.

This herb has an approximate average of 8 cups per pound.

Whole star anise can be:

  • Steeped into chai, spiced cider, or mulled wine
  • Ground into spice blends or used in baking
  • Added whole to syrups, marinades, or broths
  • Combined with cinnamon, fennel, and cloves in seasoning blends

Store in an airtight container away from temperature extremes and sunlight.

Seed Pods

For culinary use only. This product is Chinese Star Anise (Illicium verum) — safe for food use. Do not confuse with Japanese Star Anise (Illicium anisatum), which is toxic and not edible. Use sparingly, as star anise has a strong flavor and a little goes a long way. Store in a cool, dark, airtight container to maintain potency.
