How to make homemade Sweet Tea and “Brown Sugar” Boba Tea

Ingredients:

3/4 cups water + 3 cups Water

3/4 cups sugar

5-6 teaspoons Southern Sweet Tea Blend

Pinch of Baking Soda

Directions:

Bring 3/4 cups of water and 3/4 cups of sugar to a boil in a small pot on the stove, carefully string so it doesn't burn. Once boiling, boil for 5-7 minutes and let the syrup reduce. Remove from heat and set aside to let cool. This is the secret sauce for your sweet tea! Bring 3 cups of filtered water to a boil and steep 5-6 teaspoons of Farmhouse Teas Southern Sweet Tea & a pinch of baking soda (to tame the tannins in the tea) using whatever steeping method you prefer, for 5-6 minutes. After it's done steeping, strain the leaves and add the simple syrup. Serve over ice with a slice of lemon. Enjoy!

Ingredients:

  • 3 cups water
  • 2 cups tapioca pearls 
  • 2 cups coconut sugar
  • 4 cups unsweetened dairy-free milk
  • ¼ cup Southern Sweet Tea
  • Ice

Directions:

  1. Add the water to a saucepan and bring to a boil. Add the tapioca pearls, stirring quickly to ensure they don’t clump. Boil on medium heat for about 15 minutes, stirring often.
  2. Stir in the coconut sugar and boil for another 10 minutes, stirring often. Taste to make sure boba is soft and cooked through. 
  3. Remove from heat and let sit to cool completely, stirring occasionally. 
  4. Meanwhile, add the milk to a saucepan and bring to a low simmer. Stir in the Southern Sweet Tea and turn off the heat.
  5. Let steep for about 10 minutes, then strain and let cool.
  6. Spoon desired amount of boba into serving glasses, spooning some of the syrup on the sides of the glass as desired.
  7. Fill glasses with ice, then top with desired amount of the tea-infused milk and enjoy!

Perfect cold brew, works great with the mason jar brewing kit. I think the tea tastes great as is but if you like a more traditional sweet tea taste, I am sure it would be great that way.

My dad was born and raised in rural Texas, and so from childhood my drink of choice has been Southern-style sweet tea. I was looking for a loose-leaf black tea because of my concerns over microplastics from tea bags (and I would rather support a small business), and I tried a couple loose-leaf black teas from a local store, and they didn't quite do it for me. I landed on Farmhouse Teas and saw they specifically had a "Southern Sweet Tea Black Tea" blend, and I got very hopeful and luckily, the first batch amazed me! It's so much better than the regular grocery store name-brand teas I grew up with. The tea is really robust and flavorful, but also has that unmistakable dark flavor that makes sweet tea so good.

I have no idea why this tea goes so much harder than the regular Ceylon Black blends from my local store, but it simply does. I've also shared this tea with my family, my Texan father included, and they were also very impressed with it. There's no going back for me. 10/10.
