Licorice, also known as gan cao in Traditional Chinese Medicine, is a perennial legume in Europe and Asia. Its underground root system is composed of fibrous, woody strands that spread out horizontally. The root, also called sweet root, contains a sweetness much more potent than regular sugar, making Licorice Root the ideal combination of flavor and nourishment. This versatile plant is commonly used to sweeten desserts, candies, and beverages and plays an important role in traditional Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine.
