European settlers discovered the usefulness of slippery elm bark (Ulmus rubra) from Native Americans, who applied it as healing bandages. Now, it's used as a medicinal tea, or added to salves and lotions. My favorite way to use it is in digestive support teas as well as for coating irritated throats.
